Registered letters

Registered letters are delivered to anyone present at the address or delivered to the addressee at home or at the post office.

There are three types of domestic registered letters depending on the way of delivery:

Registered letters can weigh up to 2 kg. Registered letters are trackable and a compensation is payable in case of loss (3.500 ISK). When sending valuables it is recommended to buy a specific insurance for the value of the content. It is not permitted to send money in registered letters.

Registered letters are delivered to the door where Iceland Post offers such service. Delivery to businesses takes place during the day and to individuals at night.

Delivery of registered letters

Delivery of domestic registered letters depends on the service level demanded by the sender. The sender can choose between delivery to the addressee only or delivery to anyone present at the address. Delivery of international registered letters is always to the addressee only. All types of registered letters are signed for.

Delivery to individuals is Monday-Friday between 17 and 22 hours. Delivery to businesses is Monday-Friday between 9 and 17 hours. In case of unsuccessful delivery, a notice is left and the registered letter can be collected at the nearest post office on the following day. The addressee must show the notice and some form of identification to be able to collect the registered letter. The addressee can also give another person a power of attorney to collect the registered letters on his behalf.

Mailing of registered letters.

Registered letters cannot be mailed in mail boxes and should always be mailed at a post office. If a registered letter is deposited into a mail box, proper handling and trackability cannot be guaranteed. The rate for registered letters comprises of postage rate and registration rate.
